Welcome

This course introduces knowledge and skills which provide a solid foundation for the creation of interactive multimedia (IMM).

You should not expect that completing this course will provide you with all of the skills necessary to personally complete a major IMM project. Most IMM products are created by teams in which the members have different specialized skills. Although we will touch on all of the key areas of multimedia creation, there is not sufficient time to develop expertise in every area.

However, students who successfully complete this course will have an appreciation of the range of issues to be considered in the creation of IMM and sufficient knowledge to enable productive discussions with multimedia professionals. They should also have the skills to create an IMM prototype or to complete small projects for personal use.

Skills are learned by doing. Much of the work in this course is 'hands on' and there is an expectation that students will spend a good deal of their time experimenting with software and developing new skills. Not all of the activities will contribute to the final assessment but all will assist you in becoming more fluent with the workings of multimedia. Most of the activities in Modules 3 and 4 do contribute directly to assessment through being included in the portfolio assessments for those modules.

Students will need to supply their own imagination. This course will not attempt to teach creativity. However, it will attempt to point students towards some interesting examples of interactive multimedia and should encourage them to explore the possibilities in their own way.
